Nerina returns in style with her new album 'Year of the Wolf'. The album released on 30 May is Nerina's first release on Geffen Records.
Produced entirely with Britpop guitar legend Bernard Butler, 'Year Of The Wolf' is, simply put, the accumulation of Nerina’s talents honed over the years. It runs the gamut of Nerina’s love of euphoric pop songs with big heart-bursting choruses like lead single 'Put Your Hands Up', which will be released 23 May - ramped up to even more joyous heights by Butler’s stomping widescreen production - to the meditative folk-soul of 'Grace', bridging the gap between pop and art with effortless grace.
Much of 'Year Of The Wolf' was written and recorded during Nerina’s pregnancy last year, and ranges from the heady va-va-voom of 'Turn Me On Again' (“People over-intellectualise pop sometimes – good pop should be three and half minutes about sex really,” she succinctly states) to the sweeping, classical rhapsody of 'History Boys', a personal reaction to the news footage of bereaved mothers aired during the Chilcot Inquiry (“the most emotional, and political, song I’ve ever written”).

More than three years after the gold-selling Fires, Nerina Pallot has shaken up her sound, shrugged off the spectre of singer/songwriter and produced an album of clever, classy pop, including the brand new single ‘Real Late Starter.’
This stunning first single sets sassy, self-deprecating lyrics to up-tempo piano-pop that nods to ‘70s Elton John and one of Pallot’s more recent favourite bands, Scissor Sisters.
“Real Late Starter I began when I was touring with James Blunt three years ago,” explains Pallot. “I felt like a real loser, making my way to gigs on a train with my mate who was my tour manager while James was helicoptering in. I’d hear him arriving overhead and think ‘That’ll be me one day’ but it didn’t happen. I came home and, yes, still felt like a loser!
“I had so much fun when I came to finish that song because by then I was happy. There’s a real sense of ‘Yeah, sometimes life is shit, but hey, I’m actually doing okay’. Everyone feels like that from time to time and when I play it live, people love it. They seem to get it straight away.”
After working with some of the world’s biggest producers, Nerina felt that only she was able to realise her own sound by taking the reins and producing the album herself. ‘The Graduate’ took shape after two turbulent years in Pallot’s life. The first found her struggling with any sustained creativity in the midst of the promotion and touring in support of Fires. The second was a case of writer’s block caused by meeting and marrying her husband, who also hails from Pallot’s homeland of Jersey. The problem was one not often found in pop – she was too content to want to write songs.
“The idea of me writing tortured lyrics went out the window,” laughs Pallot. “After years of living out of a suitcase, watching my personal life fall apart and drinking too much, I was suddenly happier than I’ve ever been. At one stage, I wasn’t sure I’d ever make another album. I loved just being normal, having a home to go to and finally being able to attend friends’ birthday parties. I could have written a song about my fantastic fish terrine, but I doubt anyone would have wanted to hear it.”
Pallot’s sense of self-sufficiency grew when she returned to material she had written on the road touring Fires, but never finished. Realising she already had several great songs, she set about completing them, determined to write and produce the album herself. The result is a collection of classy, sophisticated pop songs that really showcase the talent of one of our more outstanding home-grown recording artists.

Nerina Pallot is a British musician who comes from a little island in the English Channel called Jersey, where the name Pallot is about as exotic as Smith anywhere else on the planet. Everybody knows everybody, everybody is quite possibly related to everybody, but this means that you can walk down the high street and see all your mates, and meet your future spouse in primary school. (True story, enquire within for further details.)
Dear Frustrated Superstar

In 2001, Nerina released her first album, Dear Frustrated Superstar, which she disowned for a bit because nobody really bought it and it got some dodgy reviews, which is a shame because it’s a lovely album really and nobody should disown something because they might be the only person who likes it. Perhaps it is time, or age, or lost brain cells, or because Gary Barlow appears to have been inspired by it, but while she thinks that title is still a bit silly and its meaning immediately misconstrued - it’s addressed to YOU, dear listener, YOU; You are the frustrated superstar in this equation – Nerina put it on her gramophone the other day and did not immediately remove it.
